Formal notice (demand letter) — formatting

A formal notice is a formal letter in which you ask a person or business to fulfil an obligation — pay an amount, carry out work, return property — within a set deadline. In Québec, it is generally a step before taking legal action, for example in small claims.

You set out the facts and specify what you demand; the generator formats the letter, with the demand and the deadline.

What is this template for?

It formally demands, in writing, the performance of an obligation within a set deadline.

When can it be used?

  • Claiming repayment of an amount owed
  • Demanding that work or a service provided for in a contract be carried out
  • Asking for the return of property

Before using it

Allow a reasonable deadline and keep proof of delivery (registered mail, bailiff, or another method that confirms receipt). Éducaloi and the small claims website explain the process.

Important notice

This template formats your demand; it is not legal advice and does not guarantee the outcome of any legal action. To know whether your claim is well-founded or which remedy to choose, consult a lawyer or a notary.
