Declaration of prior military service: when is it needed and how does it work?

Veterans, reservists and their relatives sometimes need to prove past military service for a benefit, a program or a process abroad. When official documents are lost, a sworn declaration can supplement the available evidence.

This declaration does not prove your service on its own: it describes the facts and supports official documents you may obtain from military authorities or archives.

In what situations is it requested?

  • applying for a benefit reserved for former members of the armed forces;
  • a relative's process (spouse, child) requiring proof of a parent's service;
  • supporting a request for military records;
  • rebuilding a file when documents have been lost or destroyed.

What should the declaration contain?

  • the declarant's full identity;
  • the army, unit, rank and known dates of service;
  • the circumstances of the loss of documents, if applicable;
  • a statement of truthfulness.

How does this relate to the proof of life for a pension?

A former serviceman receiving a foreign pension may also need to prove each year that they are alive. That subject is separate and covered in its own article.

Can it be sworn online?

Yes, when the document and situation are eligible for remote oath commissioning, by videoconference.
