IRCC generally assesses the genuineness of a relationship from a set of evidence — photos, correspondence, joint accounts, statements from relatives — not from a single document. A sworn declaration reinforces this file; it does not replace it.
What can a sworn declaration supporting proof of relationship contain?
- the history of the relationship (meeting, development, cohabitation);
- circumstances that prevent certain usual documentary evidence (e.g. a country where cohabitation before marriage is not socially possible);
- testimony from a relative who knows the couple well, alongside that of the partners themselves;
- a statement of truthfulness.
Does this declaration replace the other evidence IRCC requires?
No. IRCC reviews the file as a whole — a sworn declaration, however detailed, does not replace the usual material evidence (photos, communications, joint financial proof) when it is available.
Does it need to be sworn?
IRCC does not always require a sworn declaration rather than a simply signed letter — but a declaration received under oath can carry more weight in a disputed or incomplete file. Check the instructions that apply to your application.
Can it be sworn online?
Yes, when the document and situation are eligible for remote oath commissioning, by videoconference.
