Residence declaration for a child's school registration: how does it work?

Registering a child for school often requires proof of address. When you have no lease, bill or account in your name (living with a relative, sharing housing, temporary accommodation), a sworn declaration can supplement the documents you do have.

Accepted documents vary from one school or school service centre to another: ask it first for its list of requirements before preparing your declaration.

In what situations is it requested?

  • a child housed with a relative without a lease in your name;
  • a recent move with no bills or accounts at the new address;
  • a family newly arrived in Québec;
  • a custody situation where the child lives at different addresses.

What should the declaration contain?

  • the identity of the parent or guardian and of the child;
  • the child's residential address and start date;
  • the nature of the housing (lease, staying with a relative, etc.);
  • a statement of truthfulness.

How does this relate to the residence certificate?

The sworn residence certificate confirms a person's address; this one is adapted to the school context and describes a child's residence. The two documents may resemble each other in structure.

Can it be sworn online?

Yes, when the document and situation are eligible for remote oath commissioning, by videoconference.
