Declaration of school attendance for an adult child: how does it work?

Child support, group insurance coverage or a social benefit may continue after the age of majority as long as the child is studying. The payer or organization may then ask for a sworn declaration confirming the continuation of studies.

The main proof often remains an attestation from the educational institution; the sworn declaration supports it, without replacing it, when that attestation is insufficient or unavailable.

In what situations is it requested?

  • continuing child support payments after the age of majority;
  • keeping a child as a dependant on an insurance plan;
  • a benefit or allowance tied to a relative's studies;
  • settling a disagreement over continuing studies.

What should the declaration contain?

  • the identity of the declarant and of the student;
  • the institution, program and enrolment dates;
  • the study load (full-time, part-time) and progress;
  • dependency ties or financial support, if relevant;
  • a statement of truthfulness.

How does this relate to child support?

This declaration often sits within a support file; our article on the declaration relating to support details the broader context.
