Declaration of driving history abroad: how does it work?

A newcomer who drove for several years abroad often has no Québec driving record. Some insurers then accept a sworn declaration describing their experience, past claims and infractions, in addition to available documents.

Each insurer decides what it accepts as proof of experience; a sworn declaration guarantees neither a discount nor recognition of your foreign experience.

In what situations is it requested?

  • taking out car insurance after arriving in Québec;
  • recognition of driving experience gained abroad;
  • being unable to obtain a letter from a former insurer;
  • a rental or fleet process requiring a history.

What should the declaration contain?

  • your full identity and current licence;
  • the country or countries where you drove and for what periods;
  • the claims, accidents or infractions during those periods, or the absence of any;
  • a statement of truthfulness.

How does this relate to foreign documents?

If the insurer also requires a document issued abroad (insurer letter, licence), translation, legalization or authentication may come up, covered in the article on the declaration relating to a foreign document.

Can it be sworn online?
