Declaration of a lost or damaged parcel: how does it work?

To obtain a refund or compensation following the loss or damage of a shipment, the carrier, shop or insurer may require a sworn declaration describing the contents, value and circumstances.

First report the problem to the carrier or seller within the time limits they set: past that, the declaration may no longer be enough. It does not replace the claim itself.

In what situations is it requested?

  • a parcel never delivered although tracking shows delivery;
  • contents missing or damaged on arrival;
  • an international shipment lost or held;
  • an insurance claim on shipped goods.

What should the declaration contain?

  • your identity and contact details;
  • the tracking number, shipping date, sender and recipient;
  • a description and the value of the contents;
  • the circumstances of the loss or the damage observed;
  • a statement of truthfulness.

How does this relate to an insurance claim?

If an insurer is involved, the declaration may be part of the claim file; the general principles are described in our article on the insurance claim.

Can it be sworn online?

Yes, when the document and situation are eligible for remote oath commissioning, by videoconference.
