Sworn declaration of a dependant: when is it needed and how does it work?

An adult child in school, an elderly parent living with you, a relative with no income: when a third party must confirm that someone is financially dependent on you, it may ask for a sworn declaration rather than a simple signed statement.

The definition of "dependant" varies by organization (insurer, benefits plan, tax authority, immigration authority): always validate its criteria before drafting your declaration.

In what situations is it requested?

  • adding a person to a group insurance plan;
  • an immigration process where financial dependence must be shown;
  • proof of support for a relative living abroad;
  • verification by an assistance or benefits organization.

What should the declaration contain?

  • the identity of the declarant and of the dependant;
  • the nature of the relationship between them;
  • the facts establishing dependence (housing, financial support, lack of income);
  • a statement of truthfulness.

How does this relate to the declaration of financial support?

The two documents are similar, but the declaration of financial support mainly concerns a commitment to help someone, whereas this one confirms an already existing situation of dependence.

Can it be sworn online?

Yes, when the document and situation are eligible for remote oath commissioning, by videoconference.
