Sworn identity theft declaration: how does it work?

Accounts opened without your knowledge, loans taken out in your name, documents used by a third party: an identity theft victim often has to prove it to several institutions. A sworn declaration gives a structured, dated account of the facts.

In case of identity theft, act quickly first: report the facts to the police and to the institutions concerned, and monitor your credit file. The sworn declaration replaces none of these steps.

In what situations is it requested?

  • disputing accounts or debts opened in your name without your consent;
  • a correction request with a credit bureau or an institution;
  • an insurance or organizational process to regain control of your file;
  • accompanying a police report.

What should the declaration contain?

  • your full identity;
  • the chronology of what you know (date of discovery, accounts or documents affected);
  • the steps already taken (police, institutions, credit bureaus);
  • a statement that you neither opened nor authorized the transactions in question;
  • a statement of truthfulness.

How does this relate to the identity declaration?

The identity declaration confirms who you are when your documents are insufficient. Here, the goal is to explain that a third party used your identity without your knowledge — the two documents serve different purposes.
